The Abstract

A revised version of the CSA S157 standard for “Strength Design of Aluminum Structures” was published in 2017. The revision included some significant changes, including a complete reorganization so that the code resembles the corresponding steel code (CSA S16) more closely, with the goal of making structural designers more comfortable with aluminum as a structural material. Other major changes include: provisions addressing the manner in which combined forces and structure stability are considered in a new section on analysis of structures (requiring second order analysis in certain instances); new sections on aluminum-concrete composite structures, screw fasteners, and strength determination by testing; an expanded list of eligible alloys and their properties; new content concerning fatigue design using local stress approaches; and the addition of friction stir welding (FSW) as a permitted process for welded joints. In 2019, a new edition of the CSA S6 standard for highway bridge design will come out, with a similarly updated version of Section 17 (Aluminum Structures). The purpose of this seminar will be to review these recent changes to the way we design aluminum structures in Canada, by presenting a summary of the changes and illustrating their implications with design examples.
